This review is from: Gnaw [DVD] (DVD)
Relocating from the American Deep South to the terrifying British countryside, this low budget Brit take on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a reasonably diverting affair, despite having a cliche ridden plot and a group of unappealing, annoying characters serving as its main protagonists.
The plot such as it is concerns a weekend trip to a countryside cottage made by six twenty-somethings and the subsequent discovery that their hosts for the weekend have quite a nice home made pie business going on with rather unusual ingredients. Okay, it is extremely derivative and some of the dialogue is pretty banal, but once the killings start the film does build up a modicum of tension, with some gore and gallows humour to help it along.
If you are looking for a great British horror concerning cannibalism, then I would recommend either Pete Walker's Frightmare or Gary Sherman's Deathline. If you have a spare hour and a quarter on you hands, and want to check out a bit of modern low budget British horror with its heart, lungs, kidneys and intestines in the right place, you could do far worse than give Gnaw a nibble.
Plenty of extras on this release, including a directors commentary and a 'making of' featurette.
An entertaining enough horror taken for what is is, I would give Gnaw a respectable 3 out of 5.
