This review is from: Mongrels - Series 1 & 2 Boxset [DVD] (DVD)
Only two series were made, and for some reason the BBC which commissions such dire bilge in its "comedy" roster decided not to commission a third. Yes, it is expensive to hire puppeteers and actors, but Mongrels was the funniest BBC creation in years. The main characters - a metrosexual fox called Nelson, his murderous cousin Vince, a cat called Marion who speaks with a Spanish accent and confuses real life with plots of home videos he has watched, a psychotic pigeon and a vain Afghan hound who is both brainless and callous - all inhabit the back yard of a pub belonging to Gary, the only recurring "human" character. The humour is simultaneously sick, postmodern, satirical, pastiche, gross, farcical, subversive and laugh-out-loud funny. Americans may not recognise the "celebrities" who appear occasionally and are sent up, but don't worry. The main characters are superficially cute but all deeply flawed. As soon as you think they seem sweet, they do something shocking, and the musical routines are fantastic.
