Start of a fantasy saga. Celaena Sardothien has been a killer since she was eight, one of those dedicated to overthrowing a tyrannical King intent on swallowing up all neighbouring lands. After capture and a year barely surviving in a salt mine, she is offered a choice. Stay where she is or compete to become the King's Champion. If victorious, she will in due course be guaranteed freedom. In the capital's ostentatious glass palace she faces formidable challenges, whilst turning the heads of handsome Crown Prince Dorian and dashing Captain of the Guard Chaol....
This enjoyable novel exuberantly interweaves thrills, pulsating passion and matters mystical. Celaena herself could scarcely be more feisty (surprisingly well educated too - one of the few people in books nowadays using the word "whom"). Also prominently around are openly nasty Cain, enigmatic Princess Nehemia, treacherous Lady Kaltain (motivated by ambition and opium). Be prepared for sinister agendas, gory demises, despicable treachery and a splendidly gripping climax with no punches pulled.
Fantasy novels abound, some heavy going. This one has pace, humour and much to please. Only occasionally does it descend into purple prose. ("Celaena's heart gave a screech and dove behind her spine." Did it indeed!)
Escapist fare, with a rapidly growing legion of fans. They sped to the sequel, which I shall now do.
