Another good album by Buika,
This review is from: El Ultimo Trago (Con La Colaboracion De Chucho Valdes) (Audio CD)
On her fifth studio album "El Ultimo Trago", Buika has teamed up with Chucho Valdes, one of Cuba's best known jazz pianists. Although the sound of this record does not differ much from her previous two solo releases, "Mi Nina Lola" and "Nina De Fuego", it does have a more accomplished and polished feel to it although it is less adventurous.
The first two tracks "Soledad" and "Sombras" are very suave latin jazz numbers, the later song having a magical piano solo in the bridge section. "Las Ciudades" is a much softer track with dramatic raspy vocals from Buika and a gentle piano accompaniment. "Cruz De Olvido" is a pleasant but slightly forgettable song with strong latin influences. "El Andariego" is a more lively and brings some added rhythm to this release. "En El Ultimo Trago" is once again just pleasant. "Se Me Hizo Facil" is a nice uplifting track with a great ending and beautiful vocals. "Un Mundo Raro" flows nicely back into jazz bar territory. "Las Simples Cosas" and "Somos" continue with this style effectively. "Luz De Luna" is my favourite track as it is the jazziest and most melodic. The final track "Vamonos" is a another beautiful track with such passionate vocals.
"El Ultimo Trago" is another solid effort by Buika. The only criticism I have is that, although her most recent albums have been good, they sound quite similar and a little depressing in parts. It would be great to hear the more upbeat arrangements and enthusiasm again from her first release "Buika". Nevertheless, she is very good at what she does and possesses a very emotive and sensual voice.
