This review is from: Dante's Invention (Hardcover)
James Burge's book is by far the most helpful introduction I have come across to Dante. It is sharp, witty, straightforward and well-documented - and the perfect antidote to all the academic commentaries with their off-putting plodding interpretations, charts and maps. Particularly illuminating is his juxtaposition of Dante's life with his poetic achievements. My only regret is that Burge decided to give little or no time to the Purgatorio which is to my mind the most interesting part of The Divine Comedy.
