An excellent and highly readable book.,
This review is from: Rothschild Buildings: Life in an East-End Tenement Block 1887 - 1920 (Paperback)
The Rothschild buildings were erected for the poor but respectable Jewish families who arrived from Europe during the latter part of the 19th century.
Jerry White writes the historical facts simply and informatively but does not forget the human stories of the people who made their lives in this Victorian tenement building. This book is richly detailed with fascinating intimate knowledge of the families that lived there. We learn about the class structure that existed within the building and the support network that existed between the tenants in great times of need. The co-existence with the poor of the east end outside of the block is explored and the dietry and lesuire habits explained.
If you are interested in London,Jewish or Victorian history I highly recommend this book.
