One sunny day Harold Hargrave answered a knock on the door. Before him stood a man and a boy. The man introduced himself as Agent Martin Bellamy and the boy as Harold's son, Jacob. Jacob had died fifty years ago, but looked as a child of eight.
When Harold and Lucille, his wife, got over the shock and the boy behaved as Jacob would have done, they accepted him as part of the family.
As more Returned appeared in the town of Arcadia the minister, Pastor Peters, in his sermons appealed to the townspeople to be tolerant toward them. One old, embittered man, Fred Green, declared that the Returned should not be allowed to stay.
Following an announcement by the Government that the Returned should be 'contained' a Col.Willis arrived with a number of soldiers. In the hot days that followed Arcadia was now turned into a large and, as more Returned were brought in, overcrowded camp. Harold opted to stay with Jacob within the camp, but the Returned were getting restless and and craved freedom.
Helped by Agent Bellamy, Harold and Jacob returned home to find Lucille sheltering the Wilson family.
Time passed then Fred Green and his band arrived, fully armed, at Harold's home.
Now both Arcadia and the Hargrave's lives were consumed by violence and tragedy.
A well written story of how peoples lives and attitudes change when something they cannot understand occurs. The characters are well portrayed and flow easily through the story.
An intriguing, thought provoking narrative one can enjoy.
