Remastered? Not that I can tell...,

This review is from: Liar -Deluxe- (Audio CD)
As anyone familiar with this band well knows, Liar is a beast of a record. The Jesus Lizard were a blunt instrument of enormous power and on Liar they really reached a peak of sheer aural brutality. They should have called it Whiplash because that's what it feels like to listen to this at volume. Not recommended while operating heavy equipment or driving! I have long had a copy of this but got pretty excited when I saw that a remastered version was available. I have the other key JL records like Goat and Head/Pure and always thought that Liar sounded muddy by comparison, particularly David Yow's vocals, which sound like he's singing into a pillow half the time.
So I hastened to pick up a copy of this when I discovered it by chance a few years after its release. That said, I cannot distinguish a great deal of difference - if any - between the original recording and this 'remastered' version. Methinks Albini and co are taking the piss, given Albini's stated disdain for anything digital. So if you want it, buy it for the extra tracks - which includes a stonking alternate version of Gladiator - and the cool pics and content on the inserts. But 'remastered'? I don't think so... not to my ears anyway.
