This is "The One". If you find some of the First Doctor novels a bit hard going, and characterisation hard to recognise - e.g. Venusian Lullaby. Look no further..... if you only read one First Doctor novel, make it this one. Steve Lyons has proved consistently reliable as a good writer that really knows how to write for these characters. The original TARDIS crew are so spot on, and with some added depth, you have no trouble picturing Hartnell et all in the scenes also well described. Having done a little homework on the subject of the Salem Witch Trials myself, I can verify that Steve Lyons also has. He knows this era of history and seamlessly places our crew in the heart of this dramatic part of history. And the best thing is, no aliens. Just a good old fashioned Hartnell historical, with some character depth thrown in that expands and compliments the whole crew. If I was holding a "STRICTLY" judging panel - I'd invent 11 out of 10. Highly recommended.
