This review is from: Tammy and the Bachelor [DVD] (DVD)
Being somewhat of an old romantic, I can't understand why I haven't seen this film before (probably thought it would be too 'girly'). Debbie Reynolds was a real beauty - she only looks about 17 in this film although she was probably 25 or so - playing an innocent and seemingly naive southern gal living alone in the backwoods of Mississippi with her widowed grandpa (a producer of illegal spirits). The story follows her escapades and pursuit of love as she attempts to adjust to the finer ways of the upper classes when, following grandpa's imprisonment for bootlegging, she goes to live with the family of the man she and grandpa brought back to health after his plane crashed near their riverside home. Not entirely unexpectedly, it is the lives and attitudes of those around her that change, as they become enamoured of her endearingly simple but, nevertheless, wiser ways.
The film features the immortal hit song 'Tammy' beautifully sung by Debbie. This is pure nostalgia and highly recommended for family viewing. Just a pity it wasn't longer, being only 89 minutes.
