Carry On Space Nazis,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Iron Sky (Blu-ray + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray)
I had been looking forward to this since first hearing about the concept - how could you lose with space nazis? Well, apprently, like this.
I wasn't expecting high culture from this film; I had no expectations of oscar-winning performances, a deep, philosophical script or anything else like that - just a bunch of space nazis attacking the earth in a ridiculous fashion. Unfortunately, this film is actively bad. It seems to go out of its way to do poorly in everything it does, and in doing so spoils what could have been a winning formula.
The script is awful, the performances are almost uniformly bad. The design - by far the best thing about the film - is still patchy. Worst of all, the entire thing is played for jokes. When you have a premise as ridiculous as nazis with a moon base, it would help to have something played straight, as a foil, to give contrast to that premise. At the very least, if something is going to be played entirely for laughs, it ought to be able to produce some. This film tries really hard to be funny but constantly falls flat, relying on poorly-written sub-Carry On playground humour throughout - e.g., the female lead entering an opening airlock, the force of which rips her clothes off to the underwear. Great Beavis & Butthead-level humour there guys, except that Beavis & Butthead was taking the mickey.
This film has a concept with a lot of promise, but fails dismally to live up to any aspect of it.
