5.0 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT - check your DVD player's region before buying this set, 28 Feb. 2013

This review is from: Animaniacs 4 [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Before you buy this product, there's one thing you must know. The first three volumes were all labelled as "region 1", they weren't, they were multi region. Don't expect it from this DVD set. I popped it into my DVD player this morning and indeed it told me it was the wrong region.

This may seem a little disappointing for those who were looking forward to this set, but I guess the company caught on with the region coding.

I didn't let it spoil my day, just be lucky I had my laptop so I could solve the problem on there, if you are from outside of US or Canada like I am, best have a multi region DVD player handy if you want DVDs watchable worldwide.

Anyway, I managed to watch through all of them and what can I say? Nothing too special but that didn't bother me, Finally completing my collection of all four volumes of Animaniacs has been a real treat for me, I've loved this series for many years growing up, so experiencing this on DVD was just special to me.

If you're a fan of cartoons of the 90s and pop cultural references, brilliant writing and wonderful voice work, parodies and many more, then this series is for you. GO BUY IT!

P. Stark says:
Steph - Sections of this were originally written for ANIMANICS Volumes 1-3, Freakazoid Season 1 & Archer Season 3. I cobbled together this version to help with region coding issues. Many players do have codes you can use to unlock the region (making them region 0 or all). I hope this helps you. I have been importing since 2000 with no problems. All my players, recorders and drives (for DVD) are or can be made multi-region. I also check DVD region coding as requested/required if own the title in question. Good luck.

WARNER HOME VIDEO RELEASES WERE NEVER ACTALLY REGION FREE!!

For NTSC DVDs originally authored/created between 2002-2011 90% were Region 1, 2, 3 & 4 coded.
In PAL countries many are/were Region 2, 4 & 5 coded (less consistant than the Amarican releases).

I posted this about ANIMANIACS but the information may come in handy to others.

Animaniacs Volumes 1-3 (2006-7) are region coded for domestic viewing in regions 1, 2, 3 & 4 (NTSC television system/format 60Hz). But Animaniacs Volume 4 (2013) is coded for Regions 1, 3 & 4 (no longer region 2).

Pinky & The Brain Volumes 1-3, Freakazoid Seasons 1 & 2 and Tiny Toon Adventures Season 1 Volumes 1 & 2 SHOULD all be the same regions 1, 2, 3 & 4. I do own these DVDs and can check if required/requested.

Freakazoid is pretty cheap to import and at the time of writing (15 March 2013). The price low enough to avoid import fees on Season 1 or 2 (bought as two orders).

Tiny Toon Adventures: How I Spent My Vacation (2012) & Tiny Toon Adventures Volume 3 (2013) and Volume 4 when it is released in May 2013 is/will be coded for Regions 1, 3 & 4 (no longer region 2).

If you know the ORIGINAL release date of a specific DVD edition (they rarely re-author the discs for re-releases or collections) Warner Home Video USA/Canada used/uses the following coding for MOST releases (90%):
1997-2001 = Region Locked (USA/Canada Only - Region 1).
2002-2011 = Regions 1, 2, 3 & 4. UK is Region 2.
2012- onwards = Regions 1, 3 & 4 (no longer region 2).
Warner Archive - Manufacture On Demand Discs = Region Free.

Final advice/thoughts regarding current pricing and imports to the UK: -

It is cheaper to order directly from amazon.com at the time of writing. Given the £15 value limit on imported goods before potential customs charges are payable it is simpler to pay the import fees deposit at the USA amazon checkout. I use Expedited Shipping. Amazon.com refund the difference if the costs are less than estimated/paid. Alittle more expensive than normal but at least delivery is fast AND you don't have to pay Parcel Force fees on top of the import fees! It is worth looking into.

It is often cheaper and faster to combine orders.

Good luck to you.
