Prepare yourself for sleep deprivation!,
This review is from: Project Gotham Racing 2 (Xbox) (Video Game)
This is my most-played game in a long time, it is just SO addictive. I've spent many nights telling myself, "this will be the last race" only to succumb to just one more.
The single-player game is totally engrossing but playing online with XBox Live steps things up another level. No more predictable computer-controlled foes - you're battling with real people. This means personal rivalries develop, friendships form, and you'll have a lot more fun. You can talk to your fellow racers through the XBox Live headset (sold separately) - I cannot recommend the headset enough. Laughing at rivals as they pile-up into a particularly tricky corner while you sail past is particularly satisying! Hurling insults at dirty drivers is also enjoyable ;-) Most of all, it's just fun chatting to people from around the world, having a laugh with them and ganging up on any particularly annoying individuals :-)
In single-player each event has 5 difficulty levels, meaning that you can complete the game according to how skillful you are. This makes it much less frustrating than other racing games. The more hours you put into this game, the more rewarding it is. Learning the layout of the courses and the subtleties of each car's handling can shave vital seconds off your times. This is the core of the games addictiveness - the more practice you put in, the more you get out.
The single-player Gold and Platinum difficulty levels are genuinely difficult in most events, but not impossible. They're always tantalisingly close, and with each attempt you'll see yourself get closer and closer until, "Yes!", at last you get there.
If you like other driving games, you'll love this one, it's easily my favourite driving game ever (and I've been playing games since the original ZX Spectrum "Out Run"!).
What if you don't like racing games? Well, I'd still consider buying this game simply because it's the best of its kind and online play is such a good laugh. Rent it or borrow from a friend, you never know, it might just convert you.
There's a huge variety of tracks and cars to be unlocked. Each car has unique speed, acceleration, power sliding and handling characteristics. For each event you have a choice of cars. Often it's just down to personal preference rather than a car being subjectively "better". For instance, in the Ultimate car class, I love the Zonda Pagani, but most people prefer the Enzo Ferrari. Neither is significantly better than the other, so it makes races even more fun because you're using your favourite. The graphics are unbelievably good.
The soundtrack has many many tunes in it - some won't be to everyone's tastes but you can customise this.
Important: If you're lucky enough to own a widescreen TV and 5.1 surround sound, these will really help as both are fully supported and can give you that extra edge on competitors! Being able to hear your rivals coming up behind you is a big help when trying to block them. With a widescreen TV, you can negotiate the corners better because you can see more of them on the screen. These differences are subtle, but can be vital if your opponents are evenly matched.
* Varied difficulty levels provide that "just one more go" addictiveness
* Computer AI in single-player mode is actually pretty competent and almost realistic.
* Great as a quick post-pub blast with your mates.
* Online XBox Live racing is competitive and great fun too.
* The best XBox Live game so far (in my opinion).
* Amazing graphics and great sound.
* Loads of cars and each is unique - you'll soon have your favourites!
* Occasionally network difficulties get in the way of Live racing.
* If I mentioned anything else, it'd just be nit-picking!
