This is a very good beginners lens, especially if you are into architecture, still life or portrait photography. It is very wide angled and does only distort the image at the sides slightly, where as some other wide angle lenses distort straight lines more. If you are using it about 70mm then you will notice a large drop in quality and to use it fully out is not really worth it. I have found that this lens peaks at about 35mm, but is still very good all the way from 18mm up to about 70mm and you shouldn't notice much difference in quality using it in this range. I still use this lens now and am very happy with it. I would however advise a faster focusing lens if you are only using it for fast moving objects.

So in simple, it's a waste of money?
You say you can go up to 70mm...don't you feel kinda bummed out that you can use the extra 80mm?

Mr. C. Muscat says:
No it's definitely not a waste of money, this was the first lens that i bought and has been my most used over the years. I've recommended this lens to friends before and they have also been really pleased with it. My main point is if you are planning to use it mainly above 70mm or 100mm then you can probably find a zoom lens which is more suited to you. But when choosing a zoom lens you have to be aware that NO zoom lens will be perfect at every distance it covers and you will always notice a point at which it "peaks" and "drops off" But as zoom lenses go this one is great if you are planning to use it mainly below 70mm and then it also gives you the opportunity to use it fully out if you want to as well, it really does depend on what you mainly plan to be photographing.
P.s. I have just noticed the price and i paid over double for that when i bought it and i'm still convinced that it was more than worth the money : )
