A Promenade in Portland?,

This review is from: Promenade (Audio CD)
This is one of two albums (the other being the excellent Portland), by ex-Bothy Band musicians - the outstanding singer and guitarist Micheal O Domhnaill, and highly popular Celtic fiddler Kevin Burke.
Micheal O Domhnaill sings three stunningly beautiful ballads here; one in English - the evocative and moving story of the 19th century British Arctic explorer - John 'Lord Franklin'.
Then - two entrancing Gaelic ballads sung with his characteristic quiet dynamism - and tangible sensitivity to the story, and the melody. The first - 'Coinleach Ghlas an Fhomair' is an hypnotically engaging traditional ballad. I've heard other versions, but this is incomparable. Micheal brings air and light - lets it breathe and flow - organically. The second - 'Ar Ghabhail Go Baile Atha Cliath Domh' tells of the 'changeling wife'; the 'changeling' being a common feature of Irish fairy legends. There is a profound strength - yet a total lack of any rough edge in Micheal's voice, and as always it is full of heart.
Kevin Burke plays his characteristic lively Celtic fiddle tunes alongside and between Micheal's 'amhrain'. These are varied and spirited, and display his lively enthusiasm for, and mastery of his instrument.
If you care about Traditional music and song of this calibre - I know you will do the right thing and acquire this CD ASAP!
Because - sadly you won't hear the like again...
