Great performance, poor production,
This review is from: The Six Wives Of Henry Viii - Live At Hampton Court Palace [DVD] [NTSC] (DVD)I am a big fan of Rick Wakeup, my Dad recently got the DVD for Christmas and we both sat down to watch the concert. I am a keyboard player myself and I am always amazed and intrigued by his playing. The music is amazing as per usual, each piece is slightly extended as Rick explains to accommodate for themes he couldn't include due to space on the original vinyl release. As well as the "missing piece" Henry - Defender of the Faith, which is fantastic.
My problem with the production is despite spending a lot of money on a full orchestra, choir and a rock band. The production team manage to get none, if not very few shots of Rick's playing. Some would argue that the music speaks for itself, but if you have a pipe organ mounted a good few feet in the air and have Rick spend a good three or four minutes playing that organ you should have some shots of Rick actually playing. Instead we get shots from behind, and then shots of random musicians as the production team try and find a camera that can show us anything other than what looks like Rick simply sitting there.
Brian Blessed is a fantastic narrator adding insight to each of the pieces before they are played, such as Catherine Howard being only 19 when she was executed - something I did not know.
If you love Rick, you won't be disappointed... shame about the camera angles.

A. M. Smith says:
...have to agree slightly about the lack of close up work especially with regards to the pipe organ, but, turn the monitor off!! The slightly disappointing visuals are made up for by the fact that you can actually feel the power of the pipes.
Surely this type of BD is purchased 99% for the sound and it does hit the mark.
