Child's Pose by Director Cali Peter Netzer is a very troubling but gripping story, set in Romania, the story of a Mother Corneila Keneres, played superbly by Luminita Gheorghiu,a well off woman, married to a weak man, Domnul Fagarasanu played by Florin Zamfirescu, and the films deals with Corneila's unhealthy obsession with her weak and selfish, spineless son,(in his 30s)Barbu played by Bogdan Dumitrache.
The film deals with the after effects of a traffic accident, when Barbu, has knocked down and killed a poor boy of 14,right from the start,we see Corneila, capable of bribery and scheming,to ensure her son will not go to jail, for what appears to be careless driving.
Strangely as a viewer, you feel sorry for Corneila, while at the same thing, you are appalled at the lengths she goes to,to see her son will not be punished for his role in the accident, its not as if she gets any thanks from her son,for her help,he clearly feels smothered by his Mother and borderoing on hatred for her too, and in a telling scene with the son's girlfriend,Olga Cerchez( Natasa Raab)she describes, graphically, the lengths Barbu, will go to,to stop becoming a Father, after the life he has endured, with his Mother.
The scene with Corneila visting the dead's boys family is very moving but all the time,Corneila is still thinking of her son's freedom but she is genuinely moved by meeting the parents, perhaps nearing the end of all the things she has had to do for her own son,she finally relaises, what the dead boy's family have to go through.
An excellent movie, very well Acted and Directed and filmed,as well as having a good script,it gives a worrying insight to what life in Romania can be like.
