A sitcom that can be watched time and time again!,
This review is from: George And The Dragon [DVD] (DVD)
I just love this sitcom! I had never seen it before, it having been made before I was born. I knew it couldn't disappoint, and it doesn't, quite the opposite infact.
The series starts with a new cook/housekeeper being needed for Colonel Maynard's( John Le Mesurier ) household. He sends his chauffeur George ( Sid James ) to hire one from the domestic agency, only Sid is hoping for another young beauty who he can try to have a dalliance with, as he had previously tried with the many housekeepers before, causing them to resign. Instead they end up with Gabrielle Dragon ( Peggy Mount ) much to George's chagrin. Ralph (Keith Marsh ), the Colonels's gardener is happy about this as he warms to Gabrielle straight away.
Although Peggy Mount's character at first appears to be another battle-axe as with most of her well known roles, this character she plays is more faceted. You see other sides to her character which you can really warm to. George and Gabrielle become friends but most often they remain sparring partners. The story lines are strong and some have been used again in latter sitcoms ie. Bless this House. The Characters are also very strong, and you find yourself caring what happens to them.
The sitcom is as strong as any sitcom that has been produced since. It is one of my top 10 sitcoms, and one I watch very regulary.
Written by Vince Powell and Harry Driver, a great writing team! They have written so many great sitcoms including Bless this House, Two on Clover, Never the Twain etc.
