There are a couple of odd reviews on this one which should have been a red flag to stop after the first book.
I really wanted to like this book better. I gave it a chance because I liked the characters and the use of magic in the first book, despite the fact that I really did not like the writing and debated over whether I should continue with the series.
I liked the story itself. It was well-paced, and had lots of action, good character developments, and a good plot twist. But there was too much I didn't like:
- Again with excessive repetitions of pet turns of phrase, which become tired very quickly
- Again with poor writing; there were a couple of places that I read, read again, and then continued on in annoyance after a third read-through failed to make sense, and several places where prepositions were dropped for no discernible reason
- Punctuation not used well in quite a few instances (especially with dashes), which bothers me
- Several occasions where I simply put the book down, sighed, rolled my eyes, and continued on
Like I said, I want to like this book. I want to continue on and see what happens to Sorcha. But I'm going to leave the series here because I just can't get on with the writing itself. Very disappointed.
