This review is from: Turn a Blind Eye (Kindle Edition)
Unlike Alaric Bond's Fighting Ship series (also highly recommended) Turn a Blind Eye is set amongst the smugglers on the South coast and one man's quest to free the area from the grip of the local 19th century mafia, who make a fortune from their smuggling activities whilst terrorising the local populace. From this simple premise a thoroughly absorbing story is created. This idea may not seem very original so what makes Bond’s book different. As with Bond’s other books the storyline is character driven, each main character driving the action. The dialogue stems from the personalities involved, so the dialogue helps the reader to understand and conceptualise the characters. This isn’t an action novel with characters bolted on (although there is plenty of action). This, coupled with meticulous attention to historical detail, particularly with regard navel customs and equipment, gives the book a very real air of authenticity. It’s all very believable and all the more enjoyable for it.
