...invigorating and surprising...,
This review is from: Cairngorm (Audio CD)
'm a Scotchman, so one look at this CD and I was shaking with fear. Sepia pictures of lochs, and tunes with words like Strathspey in the title. Not to mention pibroch. Hoots mon, jings and crivvens! Rarely have I been so happy to be so wrong.
Because, unbeknown to me, it turns out that Ms Hall is a rather splendid jazz pianist. So, despite a potentially fatal outbreak of Trad Arrs, this is an excellent reimagining of Scotch music. The trio headed off to Crear in Argyll to record this with Donal Luny, and even when the melodies are familiar, there is nary a shortbread tin in sight.
It's a rare treat, from top to bottom, full of constant twists and surprises, nuances and accomplished performances from all the musicians. My favourites? the elgenat 'Tullochgrue' and the sprightly 'Mrs Forsyth's Pibroch'. An absolute delight.
