The Spanish Armada Reborn,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Confident Hope Of A Miracle: The True History Of The Spanish Armada (Paperback)
This is the first and likely to be the only book I will ever read on the Spanish Armada. I previously knew little in-depth detail about this momentous historical event between the English and Spanish naval powers. I had recently watched the one hour episode from Battlefield Britain which I thoroughly enjoyed, and it inspired me to take a closer look on the subject, so I opted for 'The Confident Hope of a Miracle' by Neil Hanson and was not at all disappointed.
Hanson provides a vivid account of the events and protagonists leading up to, during, and after the conflict. The book is jammed pack full of vital detail, but the author is shrewd not get bogged down in petty unrelated issues which can often clog up historical accounts making it inaccessible to the lay person. Hanson does well to keep the things running smoothly and chronologically (with the odd digression), and ultimately this book reads like a novel without overshadowing or omitting the factual content, which is how all history should be told. 5/5
