5.0 out of 5 stars Hilariously witty observations on life, 13 Nov 2010

This review is from: Candy is Dandy: The Best of Ogden Nash (Paperback)
I first heard Ogden Nash's wonderful poems on the radio 20 years ago.I rushed out and got this book. These were the first poems I really enjoyed and I have kept going back to them. They kick your brain cells into gear. I found I had to look up the encyclopedia many times to see what he was talking about because he makes funny references to many classic poems & novels. In "A Word about winter" p219 he writes,"Summer-swollen doorjambs settle, ponds and puddles turn to metal, skater whoops in frisky fettle, golf club stingeth like a nettle, radiator sings like kettle, Hearth is Popocatapetl". I didn't know what popocatapetl was but later I noticed a photo of it in the newspaper and the light went on "oh yeh!". His poems have many bits like that that will link in to things you will read in the future or distant memories. He covers most issues in life in a good humoured and light hearted way. You could read these poems to anyone without offence.
He has a line that questions "is our thinking really incling?". He likes bending the spelling to suit, which I find refreshingly novel.
p 290 And how keen was the vision of sir Launfal? "Man's earliest pastime, I suppose, was to play with his fingers and his toes. Then later, wearying of himself, he devised the monster and the elf. Enlivening his existence drab, with Blunderbore and Puck and Mab. A modern man, in modern Maryland, I boast my private gate to fairyland, my kaleidoscope, my cornucopia, my philosopher's stone, myopia.....I can wish on either of two new moons, billboards are graven with mystic runes....If my vision were twenty-twenty. I should miss miracles aplenty"
p287 The Ostrich." The ostrich roams the great Sahara. It's mouth is wide, its neck is narra. It has such long and lofty legs, I'm glad it sits to lay its eggs"
Other fantastic ones-The Cobra p18,The people upstairs p238,Compliments of a friend p253, I didn't go to church today p364,Time marches on p167, A word about winter p219, Seaside serenade p94,The people upstairs p238
p265 Next, " I thought that I would like to see the early world that used to be, that mastodonic mausoleum, the Natural History museum. At midnight in the vasty hall, the fossils gathered for a ball...aroused by who knows what elixirs, they ground along like concrete mixers...Amid the megalosauric wassail, I caught the eye of one small fossil. Cheer up, old man, he said, and winked- It's kind of fun to be extinct."
