2.0 out of 5 stars Predictable, Boring, Not a proper Stephen Leather Book, 19 Oct 2009
This review is from: Private Dancer (Paperback)
As a huge fan of Stephen Leather I've read most of his books and tried to get a copy of Private Dancer sometime ago. I only recently managed to purchase it and having read other reviews I thought it was going to be a real eye-opening, exciting read....but it's not. Neither does it have the usual gritty, violent, exciting Stephen Leather shoot outs, criminals, hero's etc etc.

I can sum this book up very easily to save you wasting your time reading it...Man goes to work in Bangkok and gets ripped of by a bargirl/hooker who he falls for (because she has long hair! Yes that's the hook!?!) as does most of his mates (with other bargirls/hookers), it all ends badly and there's no happy forever after for anyone, that's it. There's no twist, turns or anything unexpected just a load of first person waffle about what he thinks/she thinks about this that and the other.....Yawn boring.

The book is touted as a type of must read warning bible if your going to Thailand, I don't think so. If your not stupid enough to fall for a working girl (which you could do in any city in the world, it doesn't have to be Bangkok) then there's no need to bore yourself to death with this book.

Personally I rather stick with Stephen Leather's Dan 'Spider' Sheperd books, they're far more interesting and have much more action, adventure, sex, shoot-outs, car chase's, love stories, intrigue than Private Dancer has.

ARWoollock says:
Predictable? Boring? In what way? do elucidate. How can this story be considered 'predictable'? and even if it were (which is most certainly is not), does predictability necessarily mean it is bad? How would you define predictable? what are your parameters? your terms? Because I read this text (see my considered review) and thought it was anything but predictable. As for boring. They do say that it is not the thing that is boring per se., rather the person accusing. How on earth you could think this book was boring is beyond me. It is real roller-coaster, and insightful draw-the-veil-back exposé of life in Bangkok - which I guess why it is and continues to be the #1 best seller there.
