First season of the greatest show to grace our televisions!,
This review is from: The Sopranos: Complete HBO Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Sopranos season one lacks the depth of later seasons, however the more light-hearted atmosphere and humour makes up for this and ultimately gives the series greater diversity. The Sopranos showed us all that television does not have to be in the shadow of cinema, the quality can match and surpass film. This is a classic series and is best watched from beginning to end without large gaps in-between, it really should not be missed.
Tony Soprano is a man caught in the middle of two families, both are chaotic and stressful! When not struggling to control his family members he is also a capo in the New Jersey based DiMeo mafia crime family. Acting boss Jackie Aprile had been diagnosed with Cancer, and as the illness grew stronger, the stability at top of the family grew weaker. Tony's uncle Junior wants the top spot; Tony has has to contend with his cantankerousness as well as trying to control his hot headed nephew Christopher. Tony begins to haver panic attacks and is told to see a psychiatrist.
What's great about The Sopranos is how it plays up to the Mafia mythology while simultaneously cutting right through; exposing theses people for the unstable sociopaths they are but also making light of it. The series gets darker season by season the more it strips away this mythology before fully exposing the evil that is at the heart of these exploitative, murderous people. This contrast makes these initial seasons all the more enjoyable for the more prevalent humour (not that later seasons aren't also funny). Silvio doing his Godfather impressions, Christopher heavy handed attempts at getting notices and many, many 'ooooooohs!'. The Sopranos is funny, compelling, dramatic, intriguing, touching and simply sublime- my favourite television show ever and I truly believe that it will remain so forever. The series gets better that's for sure but this is where it all started and season one has a charm of its own.
