For Amicus fans only,
This review is from: Deadly Bees [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
I was really looking forward to watching The Killer Bees on dvd as it was one of the few Amicus films I hadn't seen before. When the film was originally released it flopped badly and it's easy to see why. The basic plot concerns an ailing singer who is sent to a remote island to recover after collapsing during a recording session. While on the island she discovers someone is using fear to control a swarm of deadly bees.
When the film started with an extreamly dodgy song I knew I was in for a tough time. The film plods along at a snails pace. The special effects are pitiful even for the time (the film was made in 1966)the bee attacks are particually dissapoiting. The cast that includes Hammer favorite Michael Ripper and Guy Doleman (Thunderball and The Ipcress File), who give passable performances given the awful script they have to work with. The print is pritty good and is presented in 1.78 widescreen. There are no special features which is a shame.
Let me make it clear I love most of the Amicus films especially From Beyond The Grave and The House That Dripped Blood but this film is a mess. If you are a Amicus fan then you will probably be adding it to your collection - just don't expect anything too special.
