This review is from: IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
Yeah well this game is OK,just about, closest to a flight sim on xbox 360. Graphics and aircraft models look good. However, gameplay can become repetitive. Forever doing ground attack missions on the Russian campaigns so most times you just fly over target and drop a bomb or rocket. Not a lot of story behind the missions or interaction in any other way like aircraft load out, wingmen selection and aircraft choice etc.
I like flight sims but this one leaves me a little disappointed and here are the cons first;
Aircraft are incredibly twitchy and will stall without much effort in Realistic and Simulator modes.Bearing in mind most of the aircraft are fighters and you want to dog fight using tight turns etc to gain position.
Gun recoil is excessive, you line up a shot and fire only to find you are spraying all over the place.
No wheel brakes on aircraft !!!!!, so if you're landing on a short strip you are going to roll off the end and crash. Many times as it happens on the tutorial missions! And if you play capture the airfields on-line you have got virtually no chance. Even an auto breaking set up if you shut the throttle when on the ground would have been nice.
Radio voice over and instructions don't tie in to the action,switching between accents for certain replies! You will continuously have to take your eyes off your aircraft attitude to read mission instructions which flash up all too quickly and then go leaving you wondering what to do.
HUD information on normal is too busy over the action on screen and too little if you select low info. As there are only two levels of info it becomes difficult to see the positions of enemy aircraft with full HUD selected.
None of the Axis aircraft have cockpit models so the only views are 3rd person external or just a HUD display looking through the nose,very dull!
No real depth to the game. Some missions seem incredibly bizarre. You get to the point where you don't care about the mission because the AI just messes you up wondering what you have done wrong to fail or to find secondary mission objectives.
Now the REALLY annoying bit. So you go to play on-line, the server forever tells you it is closed and when you do find a lobby once the match finishes the server closes the lobby!!!!!!!!! Why ? You then have to go through the annoying search for the lobby again. Even though you know people are still playing, it will still tell you the server is closed, utter rubbish.
Looks OK graphically,plays just about OK.
If you want to try it buy it half price as I don't think it was ever worth the full retail price.

Good revue, you covered most af the faults that keep this game from working. I have played a lot of flight sims and this could have been a good one. Its not. I gave up when I shot down 7 fighters in about 4 minuets and still failed a mission.
