This review is from: Silk And Steel (Audio CD)
The reissues of Five Star's first two albums "Luxury of Life" and "Silk and Steel" have been anxiously awaited by fans, hoping to hear the '80s pop/R&B group in remastered form with bonus tracks. There has been lots of criticism that "S&S" has poor remastering on some of the bonus tracks and that a second disc should have been added to include single versions of the album's hit singles and also to include popular club mixes.
I have had no issue with the remastering. The album sounds clear as a bell - a great job by Cherry Pop. I don't hear any cracks or pops to indicate they were remastered from a vinyl source, as has been alleged by some listeners (or simply a defect in the manufacturing of some of the CDs).
I agree a second disc would have been appropriate for the S&S reissue. After all, Five Star released a whopping six singles from this album, all of them hits, and all of them remixed in one form or another. Personally speaking, I don't mind a one-disc reissue because sometimes two discs of various remixes and single edits can be exhaustive (see the Rick Astley and Jason Donovan reissues from Edsel, or Kim Wilde's Another Step from Cherry Pop). From start to finish, the reissue of Five Star's Silk and Steel is completely enjoyable. It's hard to believe it's been almost 25 (!) years since the release of S&S.
Take a trip back to the '80s and enjoy Deniece's strong vocals and the '80s pop/R&B/dance sound which Five Star perfected and helped make Silk and Steel a classic.
