Couldn't be more happy with this unit,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Synology DS112J 3TB (1 x 3TB WD Red) DiskStation 1 Bay Desktop NAS (Accessory)
The Synology delivers everything it promises. I use it mainly for downloading and storing video and then watching it on various devices over the house.
Don't buy it for Plex, it's too slow for that and doesn't do transcoding, but the raw DNLA capabilities are really good with the Media Server app. I use it with my Samsung TVs and with my Playstation 3 and it works perfectly, no hiccups on the streaming, it packages any content into a container compatible with your device (Allows you to play, say, MKV files on devices that can only handle AVI and MPEG video like the PS3) as long as the encoding is supported (FLAC audio is a no go on most.)
The Download Center app is based on Transmission, a BT client for Linux/Mac, and works absolutely great. You can add videos from YouTube, torrents, usenet, some of the file sharing websites as well like rapidshare and the such. There's an app for iOS and Android as well, so you can check if your movie has finished downloading while having dinner.
As for pure NAS capabilities, it works quite well with both Macs and PCs we have in the house, it simply "pops up" in Finder and in your Network places, transfers go fast, usual deal.
I personally didn't touch on the web server capabilities or VPN setup yet, but I bet it's quite good quality.
All in all it's an awesome unit I'd recommend for anyone. If you want transcoding, buy a small computer to go with it, there's no other way you can get consistent streaming at the moment.
