An excellent speaker unit,
This review is from: August SE50 30W Bluetooth NFC Stereo Speaker System with FM Radio for Smartphone, Tablet, PC and Laptop - Wooden (Electronics)
The manufacturers sent me this unit to try out and review. I think it is excellent, and for its size and price it gives remarkably good sound.
It is solidly built and I like the look of it very much, with a slightly retro wood-effect case and a simple, nicely proportioned look. The unit is compact but not really a portable speaker: it doesn't have a battery so it has to be plugged into the mains and it weighs about 1.25kg. It's more of a fixed sound system for use in a living room or bedroom, although it's very easy to unplug and move it if you want to. It has a good quality FM radio which has 10 easily stored presets, a 3.5mm jack input (with a supplied jack-to-jack cable) so you can connect almost anything to it, and of course a Bluetooth receiver. I found pairing extremely simple and the range is good - up to at least 6 or 7 metres indoors, including through walls, so it's ample for domestic use. The controls are easy to use and the whole thing is very simple to set up and operate. (It doesn't have a remote control, but if you're using Bluetooth you can obviously control what you need to from your phone or other device.)
The critical thing for a unit of this sort is the sound quality, which I think is excellent. It has a rich and well balanced sound with a bright, hiss-free treble and an exceptionally strong bass for a compact unit. It will go louder than my ears can take, and even at this volume there is no audible distortion so it will easily fill a decent sized room with very good quality sound. I have tried it on everything from 16th Century choral music through solo cello and viola da gamba (which really tests a unit's bass response), symphonies and string quartets to The Who, Roy Harper and London Grammar. It performs very well on all of them. I am genuinely surprised to find a unit of this size and price with sound this good.
There are a couple of tiny niggles - the on/off switch is at the back of the unit which is a bit fiddly, and you can only scroll upward to change from one FM preset to another, so it's a bit of a nuisance having to scroll through 10 presets to get from Radio 4 to Radio 3, for example. These are negligible things in comparison to the overall quality of this unit, though. It's an easy five-stars for me, and if you're looking for a compact speaker unit with a radio, good connectivity and excellent sound I can warmly recommend this. I'm delighted with mine.
