This review is from: Girlfriend in a Coma (Paperback)
I've only read this and Gen X of Coupland's books so am not initiated into the cult that he seems to purvey. Girlfriend in a coma is certainly an enjoyable book, and is by no means a slouch. Lots of interesting characters, strange happenings (supermodel comes back to home town after burnout anyone?) and the ever lovely references to smiths and morrissey songs. I read this in a few days on holiday and that's what it is really, holiday reading. The deep and meaningful wake up call Coupland tries to spike you with seem both pretensious and curt. I don't know whether any of you read teen horror books by Christopher Pike but the last part of this books reminds me of several of his. This book could have been beautifully simple and original, instead it left you wanting to know more and annoyed at the anti climax.
By all means read and enjoy this book, but don't look for the ever ready sitire Coupland is "famous" for. It's not there.
