This review is from: Abduction [DVD] (DVD)
This is movie is a romantic thriller that, although it stars Taylor Lautner, Alfred Molina, and Sigourney Weaver, will not break box office records. Nevertheless it is watchable and entertaining, often with beautiful photography, and I don't really understand why critics have slammed the movie and Taylor Lautner's performance as hard as they have unless they have all leapt onto the Robert Pattinson bandwagon. Granted that Abduction (2011) starts off like a chick flick then moves into something of a B-movie teen flick but I thought the plot was interesting and different. Why slam Taylor Lautner for what could have been script-writing or directorial let-downs?
Teenager Nathan (Taylor Lautner) has anger issues and regularly sees a psychiatrist (Sigourney Weaver) who helps him to control his temper. Meanwhile, his father is determined to teach him self-defence in a big way. Nathan and his pretty neighbour Karen (Lily Collins) are classmates and are assigned an internet-based task that they must do together. Surfing the net, Nathan comes across a website of missing children and is shocked to find a photo of himself as a child among them. When he contacts the missing children website someone calling themselves Marisa starts to ask questions and Nathan disconnects the call without realising that his call has been traced to where he lives. Nathan starts to dig into his past and his 'mother' confesses that she and the man who raised him are not his real parents. Before she can tell him more, they have visitors - and it isn't Jehovah's Witnesses. Nathan and Karen must go on the run and they don't know who to trust.
I think the movie is a lot better than the reviews it has been receiving. I think viewers expected too much from Lautner, I imagine because of his success in the Twilight Saga movies. Most will know that Taylor Lautner starred as Jacob in The Twilight Saga movies along with Robert Pattinson who played the role of Edward.
Signourney Weaver is well known for her role in the Alien series of movies, and more recently starred in Avatar (2009). I have to admit, I am hooked on Alfred Molina. He is an amazing actor and starred in Spiderman 2, Chocolat (2000), The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010), The Da Vinci Code (2006), Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina (1997). He also starred in the powerful drama Not Without My Daughter (1991). He is presently involved in 'Vivaldi' due out 2013. Can't wait.
