Fantastic blend of Greek mythology, action and adventure,
This review is from: Starcrossed (Awakening) (Paperback)Starcrossed is a fantastic blend of Greek mythology and legend in a modern day setting. With a fantastic cursed love story and a fast paced plot full of action and adventure I couldn't put it down and devoured the whole book.
Helen has spent her life trying to blend in but she's faster and stronger than the average teenager and suffers vividly terrifying nightmares about 3 sisters crying tears of blood. When Helen awakes she finds her feet covered in dirt and scratches as if she has walked for miles. Things start to get even stranger for Helen with the arrival of the Delos family to the area. Helen sees Lucas Delos across the hallway, she realises that he is utterly gorgeous but instead of falling head over heels in love with him (which is what normally happens in YA books) Helen has out of control intense feelings of hatred towards Lucas and launches herself at him with the sole intention of killing him off. At this point, I realised this wasn't exactly going to be a run of the mill YA love story.
Helen and Lucas find themselves trapped by the three sisters, the three furies, who according to Greek legend pursue and punish evil doers and want Helen to kill Lucas, they are destined to play out a modern day Greek tragedy which the furies ensure is constantly repeated.
I enjoyed the progression of the heroine Helen who in a twist of fate is saved by Lucas and begins to accept her special powers with the help of her protectors the Delos family. She's not exactly a kick ass heroine, she has an air of vulnerability about her caused by her mother leaving her mysteriously when she was younger, but she can protect herself and can always fly off if there is any real trouble! I loved the Delos family and can see the potential in characters such as Cassie and Hector the protector (ohhh that rhymes) having their own stories. Hector especially was a fantastic character I really want the next book to be his story.
As the Delos family try to figure out the mystery of which house Helen has descended from, there is an increase in danger for Helen as a close family member reappears in her life which causes further heartache for her.
Starcrossed has pretty much everything I like in a book- action and adventure, heart achingly romantic moments and enough twists and turns in the story that kept me guessing the whole way through. I was hooked after the first few chapters and cannot wait for the next book in the series.
