Read this fine translation of Hoffmann, and get to know one of the prime movers in German Romanticism.
Jean Paul, another German Romanticist, claimed that Hoffmann had stolen the romantic motif of the doppelganger from him.
Now, Jean Paul did not own this motif, and he probably meant nothing by it, since he gladly wrote forewords in Hoffmann's books.
They both used the doppelganger and other romantic motifs like the mirror image, the portrait and the narcissos motifs, but each in their own, separate and different way.
