It is 1914 and George Farrell cycles through the Cumberland fells to deliver a letter ... he has fallen for the beautiful daughter at the Manor House ... but she is promised to another. Heartbroken George lies about his age and enlists ...
This was a good First World War saga, not too hard to read, but it did cover difficult subjects & in this anniversary year of the beginning of the war it is very topical.
Life in Flanders is covered as well as the hard times for those that returned and also the heartache for those who were left behind.
I was most interested in the descriptions of the medical facilities for the wounded & the use of prosthetics to cover up scar tissue.
