FORMULA HORROR WITH BLOODY DEATH SCENES AND A VERY BAD SCRIPT.
, 14 July 2014
This review is from: Halloween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers [DVD] (DVD)
The best thing about HALLOWEEN 5 is the beginning credits scene. Besides that this sequel has very little to offer.
It is the first really bloody Halloween movie - after the relatively tame HALLOWEEN 1 through 4 the violence is bumped up considerably and several scenes were trimmed by the MPAA. An uncut unrated version does not exist.
It is very hard to believe that 3 people actually worked on the "script", including Swiss director Dominique Othenin-Girard - the script is just so bad and pretty much non-existing. The end introduces the "cult" which ultimately kills the franchise that should not have lived past the first sequel in the first place.
The acting is downright horrible: Donald Pleasence tries his best but the script won't allow for much, he seemed to have gotten a bit bored with his role, too.
I generally like Danielle Harris (as an adult!) but in this she is just annoying - the constant screaming and crying, think HALLOWEEN 4, just worse and much more frequent. The major difference between Halloween and the Friday the 13th franchise (and several other teen slashers) was that the teens in Halloween weren't as braindead. Well this has changed in HALLOWEEN 5 - each of the teenagers is a potential winner of the infamous "Darwin Award".
Director Dominique Othenin-Girard simply copies the formula of slasher films - something all previous entries avoided. As I mentioned before the characters are now dumber than in the previous films and H5 has become a carbon copy of FRIDAY THE 13TH. I guess there are a lot of people who applaud this, but just as many won't.
I'm giving it 2 stars (and I am being very generous) because Pleasence is in it, because there are some cool killing scenes and because it still is better than the abysmal HALLOWEEN 8 - RESURRECTION and Rob Zombie's remakes. The gore still is not enough to satisfy fans of hardcore slasher like THE BURNING, MANIAC or NEW YORK RIPPER. Scenes between the killings are mostly boring and there aren't that many graphical killings to begin with.
