Not worth an upgrade,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Kindle Touch 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 6" E Ink Touch Screen Display, 3G Works Globally (Electronics)
I will be forever grateful to my Kindle Keyboard 3G as it reintroduced me into the world of reading. Therefore, I was really looking forward to receiving the upgraded Kindle Touch. There are, however, some really disappointing features that have left me feeling somewhat let down by the product. The most annoying one is the search engine. Whereas the keyboard version lets you look things up with wikipedia and google directly from the book that you are reading, the touch version only offers wikipedia as a search tool. Also, the keyboard version is designed so you can use both hands when going backwards and forwards when reading a book, but the touch version is set up so you can only go back a page with your left hand. If you want to go the end of a chapter to see how much you have left to read and then travel back to the previous point that you were reading from, you only need to press two buttons with the keyboard version but the touch takes three actions (not a big deal I know but annoying when it is and upgrade). Finally there is the cover with a built in light. Although it is not strictly a part of the Kindle Touch, it is an essential addition. For some unknown reason they have designed cover with a light that shines directly into your face!
If none of these things bother you, then it is definitely worth it as an upgrade. It is more compact, the touch screen is intuitive and the dictionary format is much more attractive. For me, however, it wasn't worth it so I sent it back.

Thank you very much as I was trying to decide which one to get the touch or the keyboard and by reading this I think I will go with the Keyboard.

I am proposing to purchase a 'kindle touch' as a birhday present for a pensioner. What other items or equipment are required so that the pensioner can use the item at once? I do not wish to purchase the advertised iten then find out other pieces of equipment are needed for the machine to work. Neither my friend or myself are technically minded.

I too think I would now go for the one with the Keyboard - a decision also helped by talking with a Kindle user (without a keyboard) yesterday. Also, I'm not happy - overall - that they only do leather covers.

There are covers available on ebay. I got one for £14.95 with a perfect reading light that you can bend to your desired position.

It is simple to use, My 90 year old mother in law uses one easily and the only equipment needed is a cover easily and cheaply bought from ebay.
Hope this helps.

Hi there you can pick up much cheaper covers on Amazon, think mine cost me £8.00 odd plus postage. Also the Kindle charger is really expensive but do a search and you can finr one for less than half price and its a mains charger.

I've also been considering buying a touch screen Kindle & it appears that it come's complete with a cable that charges the Kindle through a computer so you don't need to buy anymore equipment but you will need a computer. Hope this info is helpful for you to know before you buy.

For what its worth mentioning before anybody buys a cover for their Kindle some covers aren't compatable for touch screens.
