This review is from: Aleluia (MP3 Download)
I greatly appreciate the work of Taizé and their inclusive, contemplative music. This recording is a useful introduction to some of their more well-known chants. Alas, it does not quite do them justice: as a live recording, presumably using rather amateurish equipment, it is noisy and the poor balance is very off-putting. Indeed, the renditions themselves have several drifts in pitch and wrong notes: while I'm sure this is fine for those looking to recreate an experience of having been there, for general listening it's not quite good enough.

Interesting comment, and mostly correct - we recorded this (all bar the Magnificat - not sure where that came from, not very good quality ) live in the South Transept of St Paul's Cathedral, London (you can hear the very particular acoustic especially at the end of the Alleluia) over New Year 1986 during the Taize European Meeting under the direction of Brother Paul (one of the original collaborators with Jacques Berthier) and Sister Nuria. The Orchestra was a mixture of good amateurs and professionals from around Europe, the Soloists were mostly Music School students and the choir was amateur. Of course in addition you can hear the voices of the many thousands of people in the cathedral.

So not the most ideal acoustic, not the most professional ensemble but certainly an authentic record of the prayers in London that year, and with some very special memories for me.
