1.0 out of 5 stars I really didn't like this episode, 29 Dec. 2010
This review is from: Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol, 2010 Christmas Special [2010] [DVD] (DVD)
I first need to say that I enjoy Doctor Who, and whilst David Tennant is my all time favourite Doctor and the one I would most like to be locked in the Tardis with, I fully went into the new series and this Christmas special with an open mind - indeed, I thought Matt Smith did okay in his first series as the Doctor. However, I did find the series story lines much weaker than during the Eccleston/Tennant days and I took an instant dislike to Amy Pond. However, watching the Doctor Who Christmas special is something of a tradition in my household and as such we all settled down on Christmas day with a hot drink ready to be entertained. A Doctor Who reworking of A Christmas Carol - what could possibly go wrong??

Only we weren't entertained. We were bored. We were puzzled by the lack of pace, decent story, action and or sense of enjoyment with this show. It just didn't seem to work - I honestly don't know what to say other than I thought the script was poor, the story unduly drawn out in parts and was (in my humble opinion) a waste of a perfectly good Christmas story line. Come on writers, you can (and have) done much, much better than this - remember the really good stories, The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Blink, Silence in the Library etc.

This could have worked as an episode in the series, but as a Christmas special it failed to deliver on excitment and entertainment. It did reinforce however, my dislike of Amy Pond!! Her one main skill seems to be shouting 'Doctor' at every opportunity - I really miss Rose/Donna/Martha - I just don't get the interplay between Amy and the Doctor, which I did with the other assistants.

I am really hoping that Series 2 improves.

new head writer! things have changed entirely with Matt Smith. (which is sad, I would really like to see how he would handle the better material Tennant had to work with)

Could not agree more with your comments on amy pond. I am glad I am not the only one who gets annoyed by the constant "doctor" scream she has perfected. They are trying for sassy, but she is just coming across as damned annoying.

"her one main skill seems to be shouting 'Doctor' at every opportunity"
And this is different from Rose and Martha how, exactly? Not to mention every classic-series companion who wasn't Leela.

proper doctor who fans, who watch it for what it is, not for sex appeal, who have seen the series from near the beginning and is an actual fan of doctor who and not just a david tennant fan, like you, wanted to watch it.

After totally enjoying Series 1,2 and 3, I was completely turned off Doctor Who by the 4th series. The sole culprit was Catherine Tate. Is it possible that Amy Pond is a bigger turn-off than Catherine Tate's character?
