Adam Thorpe doesn't seem to know quite what he wants his book to be. A thriller, a travelogue, a romance, an essay on the joys of flying aeroplanes, a psychological study of guilt? To varying extents it's all of these. The stilted Chandleresque language and the wooden characterisation are at odds with the convincing ways in which he describes the settings in which his story takes place. And yet....something kept me reading, wanting to know what would happen next. There's a touch of Richard Hannay in his Bob Winrush and of The 39 Steps in the plot. In spite of myself I did reach the end of the story - and now I want to read the next instalment.
