The Disco Era,
This review is from: Can't Stop The Music [DVD] (DVD)
Can't Stop the Music is a 1980 American musical comedy film, the film was shot at MGM studios in Hollywood with location shooting in New York City and San Francisco and shooting began in May 1979 at the height of the disco craze.
Unfortunately by the time the film was released in 1980 the disco genre was experiencing a backlash. However, the soundtrack album from the film was better received, going top 10 in the UK.
Since its initial failure Can't Stop the Music has gained something of a cult status internationally as a camp film. The story sees songwriter Jack Morell (Guttenberg) getting a break as a DJ at a local disco Saddle Tramps. His room-mate Samantha Simpson (Perrine), a retired supermodel agrees to use her connections to get him a record deal. Samantha decides Jack's vocals won't do, and the story revolves around Samantha recruiting individuals that come together as the 'Village People' and getting them a record deal.
The plot is thin, but the musical numbers are lavish and entertaining. Was the disco scene really like this!!!!
