More than the sum of its parts,
This review is from: Shiver (Audio CD)
Where do you begin with an album like shiver. On the first listen my initial reaction was pseudo-country-pop, a cross between the album tracks of Shania Twain and the more recent works of Shawn Colvin, the guitars felt out of joint with the vocals and the lyrics were a little niave in places.
On a second listen everything just seemed to come together. This woman has a voice like no other. The sheer power when unleashed on the cover of 'All by myself' (the track that the Bridget Jones Diary film opened with) to the post-desperation / there's hope for everyone track 'You rescued me'. Add to this the graceful title track 'Shiver' and 'There is no Arizona' - carefully crafted lyrics and a chance for Jamie to let her voice shine and you find yourself listening to something that is so much more than the sum of its parts.
While the album is not perfect (there are moments reminiscent of the 1980's - not always a good thing) it is a definite forewarning of things to come. I expect great things in the next couple of years.
