This review is from: Gemworld: Bk. 2 (Star Trek: The Next Generation) (Mass Market Paperback)
If you're not aware of the plot, a member of Starfleet comes from a planet which is a giant crystal lattice, the remnant of a planet which a surprisingly diverse flora and fauna.
The book is excellent. The writing flows well, and the descriptive passages are very clear, and leave you with a good mental image, of what must be a hard place to describe. I do say that the fact that there are pictures of the gemworld on the cover _do_ help with the visualisation though.
The story is good, and the way that the local inhabitants react to the star fleet help, and the way the situation is resolved is very similar to the episodes. It loses a star only because the characters do appear to ignore obvious clues, and do their usual sterotypical things, which does irritate slightly. Apart from this (probably petty) niggle, the double-book set is very good.
