Over the top!,
This review is from: The Sweeney [DVD] (DVD)
I'm not sure what the producer was trying to achieve with this movie but, it didn't make it for me. It has its moments, but these are islands in a somewhat turgid sea.
Ray Winston as the overweight, totally over the top hard man Jack Regan is miscast and a waste of a good actor. In fact most of the casting is poor and does nothing for the credibility of the characters. The women are cosmetic, beautifully decorative and have the same `look alike' profile that the US movies go for. It was hard not to scorn Ray Winston's aging, podgy, foul mouthed sartorial disaster of Jack Regan's affair with his young, drop dead gorgeous, female police partner. Yeah, right.
The plot is tenuous and lurches from one far fetched action scene to another. All of which are laughable rather than gripping. As for police procedure, well I'm all for sacrificing a little reality to enhance the drama but this movie totally abandons it!
The sound is flawed; badly balanced too frequently leaving the dialogue inarticulate and difficult to follow.
On the plus side, the acting is fine and, for its genre, it's well made. So, horses for courses, it will no doubt appeal to a niche audience.
