4.0 out of 5 stars Kaempfert swings again, 14 Nov 2013

This review is from: Let'S Swing (Audio CD)
On first acquaintance this might seem to be a "Bert Kaempfert plays Glenn Miller" type album, featuring as it does several tunes of a style more often associated with that orchestra, but this truly is Big Band Kaempfert swinging at it's best! The 14 tracks running 43+ minutes are: Opus One, Tuxedo Junction, Jumpin' Blue*, Wake Up And Live*, Night Train, Easy Glider*, Take The A-Train, Walkin' And Shoutin'*, The Continental, Perfido (Perdido?), Free And Easy*, Choo' Choo Ch' Boogie, Tea & Trumpets*, and Skyliner... although the tracks marked * are actually original Kaempfert/collaborative compositions.

In reality, this is a 1999 Polydor compilation of the more lively swing-based tunes from Bert's prolific early 1970's period, including tracks from 1971's "Orange Coloured Sky", 1973's "Yesterday And Today" and "To The Good Life", 1974's "The Most Beautiful Girl", and 1975's "Golden Memories" and "Forever My Love" - albums which mostly haven't been available for many years until the recent 2011 reissues. As many of those original albums had been recorded at the same Studio (Rahlstedt in Hamburg) over just a few short years, there's good consistency in audio quality with Bert's usual high production values applied, and little to suggest this might be a cobbled-together compilation. Of course, by the early 1970's, the trademark "clacking bass" of Kaempfert's distinctive 60's compositions had all but disappeared, and his arrangements became (in my view) all the poorer for it, but many tracks here do feature the solid acoustic guitar and brush-work rhythms that helped create that signature Kaempfert sound. As such, this album for me remains an enjoyable listen; it's an upbeat, swing-driven big-band collection of Bert's rhythmic "feel good" best from that early 70's period, and is in many ways preferable to his later 1978 release simply titled "Swing". It's a nicely selected and put together package that flows well, and is recommended for any toe-tapping Kaempfert fan who would perhaps prefer all those earlier uptempo big-band swing numbers collected together on just the one disc. By any measure, these are highly accomplished performances worthy of addition to any swing-enthusiasts collection.
