This review is from: Wolf Hall (Hardcover)Hilary Mantel grabbed my attention from the first sentence of this book and had me completely immersed in it to the very last two words. This book is magic. The author is a conjuror and she made me feel like I was right there behind Cromwell's eyes seeing, sensing, experiencing everything firsthand, thinking Cromwell's thoughts with him, somehow transported by the author into the vast and flashing neuro-circuitry of his brain. Moving on, Cromwell's inner life is brought seeringly to outer life with prose that crackles with wit and a style that is in-your-face, immediate, on-the-move, and utterly daring and original. I have to say I find it amusing and maybe bemusing(?) that there are actually people out there who have rated this great, great generous gift of a book with a meagre one star. How can this be? I don't get it. I couldn't put the book down and was sorry as anything when it ended and that precious keyhole looking on to a vast past world sealed up for good. The end. Well, I'm looking forward to a sequel! As for those few one-star givers out there, well, being misunderstood or appearing to be incomprehensible to some often comes along with genius. As authors go, Hilary Mantel is just that, in my humble opinion: sui generis and a genius.
