This review is from: Challenging Behaviour in Dementia: A Person-centred Approach (Speechmark Editions) (Paperback)
I had been looking for a book that would help me work more effectively with informal and formal carers including care home staff. I have been working in older people's mental health, mostly with people suffering with dementia for many years and over the years the approach has changed, its just helping others keep up. This book does not try to give a 'one size fits all' approach for anyone to learn how to work with people with dementia but as it says on the cover, it is a 'person-centred approach'. This means you have to spend time and energy learning about each person and looking at their biography and try and work out what they are trying to 'tell you' through their behaviour. Then you have to try different approaches for each person......just like you might do for anyone else!
A book like this could be compulsory readying for all care home staff.....even the cook and cleaners!
