This review is from: Summer Wars [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Having enjoyed the excellent "Girl who leapt through Time" movie with my daughter, I bought this on the recommendation, nay insistence of a friend (take a bow Japan Man) and did not regret it for a moment. It has an excellent story, fantastic characters and of course brilliant animation. Whereas the plot is a bit "out there" and very much of it's time for the wired (and wireless) generation, it has more than it's fair share of the human and emotional side with an eccentric and varied cast, all but two of who are from the Jinnouchi clan that is steeped in history and proud of their past battles (victories and defeats). It has something to appeal to everyone - geeks, kids, oldies and just about anybody who is part of a family.
It's a bit of a roller coaster ride, switching between the reality of a family summer and the "avatars" inside the computer network of OZ. The winners of these virtual battles control the network with real implications for the real world. What starts of as a simple two-player fight as the OZ servers are infiltrated becomes war as more accounts are snatched and the single badass avatar becomes a digital monolith that only the proud Jinnouchi family can hope to defeat by fair means or foul. There are surreal moments as one uncle brings in a boat (for power) and another rolls up with a super computer ("think if it as a test") and blocks of cooling ice to do battle. It's not all about the "war" though, it's a love story and the tale of a family pulling together in adversity and bringing back the black sheep after one of their own dies. Another member avidly watches her son play baseball on TV, the final game a metaphor for the ongoing online antics. Great stuff and supremely watchable.
This is a more grown up offering than TGWLTT and non-Facebooked olds may be a little perplexed at first but that should not put you off what is an absolute gem. The writer of this film definitely has a great imagination...or perhaps great foresight.
