This is a generously-sized book. One thing this does is to give the illustrations the space they deserve to communicate the deliciousness and texture of the finished dishes. Good photography `sells' recipes more than anything else, and this book abounds with beautiful full-page images of every recipe.
Now, I don't know about you but for me a recipe book is useful if it gives me half a dozen new things that I enjoy and would want to eat again and this book certainly does that. I'm not a vegetarian, but the rest of my family are and I have no problem if a meal contains no meat. In fact it's nice to get away from the meat-with-everything once in a while, so I have no doubt that carnivores will also enjoy many of the dishes contained within these pages.
I like that it contains information about nutrition and how to obtain sufficient protein and the other essential nutrients usually ingested from the meat portion of the diet. It seems that 200g of peanuts has the same amount of protein as 170g of beef steak, and 240g of red lentils are equivalent to two fat pork sausages.
If you are like me and enjoy eating fruit and vegetables when it's in season (rather than have it air-freighted from the other side of the world) there's an extensive list of what to look out for in the shops at the appropriate time of year.
The book begins with a look at The Essentials: mushrooms & herbs; vegetables & fruit; legumes, nuts, seeds & oils; rice & grains; and dairy & eggs - giving out a little basic information to enhance your use of these foods. The rest of the book has recipes grouped into convenience: quick meals, snacks, baked... Towards the back of the book is a nice little section on dressings and sauces along with a selection of menu ideas.
The recipes are well laid out and the instructions easy to follow. The author is clearly passionate about enjoying food and sharing that pleasure with others.
Nice book. I recommend it.
