This review is from: King George And Queen Mary - The First Windsors [DVD] (DVD)
I knew I was going to be pleased with this DVD and I wasn't disappointed. This did what others fail to do,it got down to the nitty gritty and exposed weaknesses in the Royal family members that are usually air brushed out,so to speak. The film shows some highlights of Queen Victoria's Jubilee celebration and her subsequent funeral. There is also film of the fated Czar Nicholas,King George's cousin, and you will see the German Kaiser,in all his pomp,as he also was a cousin to King George the fifth.

King George and Queen Mary were devoted to each other, that is plain to see, even though Mary was first engaged to be married to George's older brother who tragically died.It shows the historical events leading up to WW1 and how this affected them, and it further shows how Queen Mary worked unstintingly for the War effort.

King George the 5th was his mother's darling.Queen Alexander loved Georgie dearly, and fussed over him, even when he was quite grown up as if he was still a little boy.So there was a very maternal bond between mother and son that was never broken or diminished. In stature George was small, but one thing he really loved doing was to dress up in all his wonderful uniforms, which was just as well as most days he had to change into 5 differing outfits.

Queen Alex, his darling mother, died in 1926,many years after her spouse Bertie,Edward the 7th,the socialite King who adored women and could not keep his hands off them married or not.Georgie knew how all this affected his mother,so this may have strengthened the bond between them even tighter.

George was not a man who liked large palaces and huge mansions, quite unlike his father. No, he was used to living in naval quarters, as much of his youth was spent in the Senior Service (that he loved) and, consequently, he much preferred small houses with smaller rooms.

Queen Mary bore George the fifth six children, five sons and one daughter. The eldest son was the next in line to the Throne and also inherited the title of the Prince of Wales,as are all eldest sons called of the reigning Monarch. However David, the future Edward the eighth, was uneasy with his role, as he developed into a handsome young man.... how he hated all the pomp and chivalry and, in no uncertain terms let this be known. In some respects he acted like a spoilt brat..His father despaired of his oldest child behaviour, and this is clearly stated many times in this DVD and not covered over as it has been in the past.

David was a disaster,he eventually after many affairs, developed a fascination with an American socialite married woman,Mrs Wallis Simpson, and, as they say, "the rest is history!".Bertie, our Queens father was next in line for the throne, and even though Bertie was an unassuming man with a stammer, his older brother showed no mercy, and abdicated in favour of divorcee Wallis Simpson.Of course King George the fifth died in 1936,and thankfully was spared the shame of his son's abdication.Although his mother Mary was still alive, and she must have been extremely unhappy at what he did.

This DVD would be a wonderful aide to any young person studying this line of British history and I have no hesitation in recommending this film as a very accurate source of material and a very enjoyable film at that.
